At Cheshunt Tile Centre, we take a real interest in the products we sell. Our commitment to learning about floor and wall tile types of all varieties allows us to help clients who require help when browsing our tile shops near Enfield.
One area of particular interest is the craftsmanship that goes into creating porcelain tiles, which are a lot like ceramic tiles but more durable. Before they reach tile shops, porcelain tiles go on quite the journey, and on this page we thought we’d provide some insight into the work that goes into making them.
Porcelain tiles are made from clay. In year’s past, manufacturers around Enfield would source this clay from a riverbed. But nowadays, it’s much easier to create clay out of pulverized rock, marble or slate. Once a suitable form of clay is created from said rock, it’s on to stage two.
The first major step on their way to shelves in tile shops is the first round of firing. Traditionally, Enfield tile manufacturers would create the bisque (translation: the tile body) out of wet clay by hand. However, technological innovation led to manufacturers adopting a new technique where two metal dies dust-press the bisque.
Understandably, this has sped up the manufacturing process, great news for tile shops like our own near Enfield, which can now order in large quantities of tiles for clients and receive them within just a matter of days (if not hours). During this stage, the tiles are fired within a kiln at 106-120 Celsius. This fixes their shape in place.
Finally, the kiln is heated to 750 Celsius and glaze decorations are added. This gives the tile its sheen or lack of, depending on the product being made. An alternative to glaze decorating a tile within a kiln is digitally printing the tiles’ surfaces. This latter method is used for certain types of tile like rectified ones. Laser cutting may be employed to ensure these tiles have perfectly uniform dimensions.
There you have it! Now the tiles are ready to be sent on their way to tile shops all across the country, including ours near Enfield. If you’re looking for tile shops that offer a wide range of products at extremely competitive prices, look no further than Cheshunt Tile Centre.
